Cam Design ProgramsSMOOTH4 - SMOOTH5Screen displays from SMOOTH4 showing velocity and acceleration curves before smoothing. Actual smoothing of lift data is done so as to minimize the changes to the original lift curve. Typical 4 or 5 place data can be smoothed and extended to 8 places without changing any point more than .0001/.0002". Often the magnitude of the changes will be even less. Output options include hardcopy summaries of all motion data and finished Landis .P files (to disc) for a Landis 3L CNC cam grinder. The jerk curve can be toggled on/off for easier display viewing. SMOOTH5 graphic display is similar to this but calculated cam data is for an oscillating arm follower system as measured with a translating follower. A display of SMOOTH4 shows the velocity and acceleration curves after smoothing. This program works with either flat or roller translating follower systems. SMOOTH5 operates in a similar manner but uses geometry input data for an oscillating arm follower system. Comparing numerical derivatives from these programs with analytical derivatives shows close correlation (1 part in 8 decimal places). This is the easy way to smooth cam data, an otherwise extremely tedious task. All these programs need is one open side and one close side file in one degree increments starting at maximum lift and ending at zero lift. Calculation and screen redraw time is approximately 2 seconds. Either program can also import old blueprint data and Landis .P files for smoothing. |
